To apply for your own design or utility patent without an attorney, get the book Patent It Yourself by David Pressman.

POSITIVE NOTE (to those short of money looking for options): After submitting a design or utility patent, the responding letter from the PTO office may take about 5 months. It is possible and is acceptable through the PTO office to send a filing fee 60 days after you receive this response, however it is considered late and will cost $230 instead of $165. This may be a fair arrangement if you plan to cause your product to pay for itself. Depends on how you look at it.
